FAQ

Common questions

What is XAU/USD and how is it priced?

XAU/USD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars, quoted to two decimals, so a move from 4275.00 to 4275.01 is one pip. One standard lot is 100 oz, which makes the contract large relative to a small account. The quote you see is the mid-market reference, not necessarily your broker's fill.

What actually moves the gold price?

Gold responds mainly to US dollar strength, real interest rate expectations, inflation data, central bank buying and safe-haven demand during geopolitical stress. Because it pays no yield, it tends to react to changes in what cash and bonds offer. None of these can be predicted reliably, which is why position sizing matters more than forecasting.

When is gold most liquid for a trader in Nigeria?

Liquidity is highest when the London and New York sessions overlap, which falls in the Nigerian afternoon and evening. The Asian session is thinner and spreads can widen. Trading hours follow the global market, not Nigerian banking hours, so plan around the session rather than your working day.

Does gold trade on weekends?

No. The XAU/USD market closes late Friday and reopens early Monday, so there is a gap over the weekend when news can move the price before you can react. Positions held through the close carry gap risk that your stop cannot protect against. Many traders reduce or close exposure before the weekly close.

Is gold trading suitable for a small Nigerian account?

It can be, but only with strict sizing, because one lot is 100 oz and even 0.01 lots move real money. High leverage is a cap, not a setting to aim at, and losses can exceed what you planned. Trade only funds you can afford to lose, and confirm your broker on the SEC Nigeria register first.
